Elvis went to Nashville for a recording session. The group of musicians were joined by saxophonist Boots Randolph. The plan was to record 10 songs over the next few nights, but Elvis recorded 12 songs in one marathon session from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., including "It's Now Or Never" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight?". This was the first time he had gone into a recording studio since leaving the U.S. Army.
